Tips For Traveling Solo Part 2

We’re back with the second part of Tips For Traveling Solo. Let’s dive right into the tips we have to help you make the most of your next solo adventure. Let’s go!

Make the trip about you and your interests

This is your time to do the things that make you happy. Because you are traveling solo, you are able to focus solely on your interests. Take advantage of this!

Make sure you pack medical necessities.

You won’t have a travel partner to make a run to the pharmacy if you need some ibuprofen or stomach medicine. It’s important to remember to pack everything you could possibly need. Just make sure your products are in their original labeled containers. We suggest bringing: ibuprofen or acetaminophen, migraine medication, something for motion sickness if you’re prone to that, anti-diarrheal medication, as well as any prescription medicines that you take regularly.

Talk to other people who have traveled solo to find out about destinations where they felt safe.

This can give you a lot of insight. Getting first-hand accounts from people who have visited destinations that interest you can be very beneficial. First, and foremost, ask if they felt comfortable traveling in the area. You may find out that a destination on your bucket list is not safe or vice versa. Fellow solo travelers can offer a wealth of information.

Be aware that there are sometimes extra fees for solo travelers.

Extra fees are something that can come as a surprise to many solo travelers. These fees often stem from the room rates. Companies get more value if they fill a double occupancy room with two travelers. With only one person in the room they lose money. However, it should be noted that solo traveler fees can sometimes be negotiated for a discount.

Pack light.

We highly recommend packing in a carry-on and your personal bag that is at your seat on a plane. If you pack strategically, this shouldn’t be an issue. And, remember, many hotels offer laundry service or have laundry facilities. Take advantage of this and lighten your load.

Meet new people, but be safety aware.

When traveling solo you have the opportunity to meet people from around the world. This can be exciting! However, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Don’t let people know that you’re alone. If you are on a tour, be sure to stay close to members of your group.

Don’t give your travel information to people you aren’t familiar with.

Beware of people lurking on the outskirts if you’re traveling with a tour group. People of questionable character often prey on tourists. They pretend to be friendly locals and end up being pick-pockets, or worse. Don’t share your travel itinerary, hotel, or evening plans with anyone. If someone asks what you have planned, it’s easy to divert by throwing the conversation to the group (if there is one), or back to the person. You simply say, “I will be with the group, what are your plans?” Then, excuse yourself and join a different conversation.
