Beijing’s Summer Palace was a royal retreat for centuries and it’s easy to see why!
Let’s just talk about one of our favorite parts first. The Summer Palace is a bargain! For less than $10 per person you can visit a UNESCO World Heritage site. That…is…a…steal!
Now, let’s look at what you get for your money.
People often enter the grounds expecting to see the fairytale fortress walls with a large stone building situated in the center. Well, that’s not exactly the case. The term actually refers to the entire complex of buildings, gardens, and bridges.
The palace is situated on the banks of Kunming Lake, a serene setting that offered an escape from the intense summer heat in Beijing. The lake was, and is still, the perfect place to spend an our, or few, floating around in a covered boat.
That’s right, Beijing’s Summer Palace boasts the world’s longest covered walkway. Not only does this structure offer shade from the summer sun, it entertains visitors with beautiful artwork that fills its entire length of over 2,000 feet!
The next time you’re in Beijing add the beautiful Summer Palace to your Must-See list!
