We Visited Istanbul, Turkey…And it Was Budget Friendly! (Part I)

Istanbul, Turkey is an amazing budget-friendly international travel destination. Follow along as we share Jeff’s adventures through a city steeped in history, art, and culture.

Istanbul Must-Dos

There is so much to see and do in Istanbul! We are only covering a few of the highlights in this post. If you would like to see video footage of Jeff’s adventure, follow along on our YouTube channel. Link Here.

Galata Tower

This tower was originally constructed to be a watch tower, but went through many reinventions over the years. It also served as a prison for a time. The tower was even used as a fire overlook. No matter what purposes it has served, after several large overhauls, the tower still stands today. It offers amazing panoramic views of Istanbul.

If you decide to visit the tower, be prepared for the uphill trek to the top. This can be especially taxing if you visit during the warmer months when the heat is ninety plus degrees.

Dolmabache Palace

The ultimate in home office architecture! While the palace was ordered to be built by a sultan in Istanbul who seeking a home upgrade, it also occasionally served as the administrative base for the Ottoman Empire. The palace is a stunning example of modern royal architecture during the 1800s.

One Country – Two Continents

It’s kind of crazy to think that one country can span two continents, but Turkey is a part of Asia and Europe. A waterway is all that separates the two parts. You can cross the divide by bridge or ferry. So, if you would like the opportunity to knock two continents off your bucket list at once, visit Turkey.

A Bazaar Adventure

Bazaars are a way of life in Turkey, and they are huge! You can find pretty much anything you might need in a local bazaar. They have everything from tea and coffee to Disney shirts and fine jewelry. You can also get fantastic deals on produce at these local establishments. Jeff was able to get a pound each of grapes, cherries, and plums for under $3 all together!

Cistern

Whether you’re traveling during the summer and are seeking a retreat from the heat, or you just want to see an amazing architectural feat, be sure to visit the Cistern in Istanbul. Not only is this underground escape approximately twenty degrees cooler than above ground, it is a beautiful sight to behold. It costs catwalks, large Roman columns, and gorgeous domed ceilings. This is a definite Must-Do.

Sultan’s private mosque

We know the wealthy and the powerful have many luxuries, but did you know that one of the Sultans of Constantinople (the former name of what is now Turkey) had his own mosque for worship? That’s right. While is is much smaller than the Blue Mosque, it is still a beautiful example of architecture in this region.

Obelisk

Obelisks are not uncommon. However, the obelisk found in Istanbul has a rather unique story. Also referred to as Cleopatra’s needle because of their shape, obelisks have commonly been used throughout history as monuments. And, this one is no exception. It was actually native to Egypt, but was taken from a larger group of similar obelisks and ended up in Istanbul. One of its sister monuments is located in St. Mark’s Square. These monuments were often re-used to designate a turn-around point in Roman chariot races. Well, that’s a traffic signal you can’t miss.
