Scotland is full of two things – history and beauty. Both are quite literally around every corner. And such was the case with the Old High Church and Kirkyard in Inverness.

History And Architecture? Count Us In!

During our late afternoon stroll on our day of arrival in Scotland, we were strolling along the River Ness when we saw an old church perched on a hill. Of course it piqued our interest. So, we decided to investigate. And, we were far from disappointed.

Inverness’ Oldest Church

The church is considered to be the oldest in Inverness. Its religious roots even date back to the 500s when it’s rumored that St. Columba preached upon that very hill.

Standing Proud

The Old High Church was built in the 1760s. It’s hard to believe that something that old would still have any parts of it standing today, but it does.

A Kirkyard With A Story

Even more impressive, the church’s tower was built in the 14th century. Not only that, but there are ancient gravestones there as well. The history, the architecture, and the setting are simply stunning.

One of the most impressive pieces of architecture we saw on the property was the mausoleum that was built in the mid 1600s! While it is in disrepair, it’s still somehow beautiful.

Add This To Your Inverness Must-See List

If you have the chance to visit this incredible piece of Scottish history, please do! The church is for sale and there is no telling what will happen to it.

Bonus!

The entrance we used to visit the church was the one on Church Street. Bonus…it’s located directly next door to Leakey’s Book Shop. Be sure to check out our video on Leakey’s HERE!
