We Visited Monteriggioni, Italy!

During our recent trip to Florence we took a day to explore some of the nearby hilltop towns and Monteriggioni was our first stop!

If you ever have the opportunity to visit any of these unique cities don’t pass it up. They offer insight into authentic Italian life of the past.

This beautiful town is encircled by a wall that is dotted with 14 towers which were constructed in the early 1200s. Many of these towers still stand today. Some are even open for visitors to explore.

This Town is Famous!

It’s hard to believe, but this small town nestled atop an unassuming hill in Tuscany is actually pretty well known.

If you love classic literature you may recognize this town from Dante’s The Divine Comedy. That’s right the famous poet, and ambassador to the region, mentioned this beautiful village in his most famous work.

For you avid gamers, Monteriggioni is part of the storylines for both Assassins Creed II and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood.

Monteriggioni has quite a history

It’s hard to believe that this city once served as fortification of sorts during a war between Florence and Siena. The city’s construction, despite its beauty, was actually very strategic. There are two gates to the town, one that faces Rome and one that faces Florence.

Our favorite part of Monteriggioni

While we immediately fell in love with the quaintness of this tiny town, the absolute best part was is its stunning views. Standing atop the hill, looking through the city gates, you are met with the rolling hills of Tuscany.
