Traveling With Food Allergies / Intolerances

Traveling with food allergies / intolerances may seem intimidating at first, but it’s absolutely doable with a little planning. We have some tips and tricks to help make your experience a breeze!

Pack your own snacks

If you’ve been hanging out with us, you know that we are big proponents of packing snacks for travel. This especially applies to those of us with food allergies/intolerances. You just never know what the snack options will look like along your journey. So, keep yourself safe and pack your own.

Check out restaurant menus online

Some restaurants don’t have indicators on their menus (especially for things such as gluten free), but if you ask they are usually able to accommodate you. If you have a food allergy be sure to discuss that and emphasize that to the waiter/waitress who might be assisting you.

Not everyone will accommodate you

If you are traveling in smaller areas or in other countries, keep in mind that they might not necessarily be able to accommodate your need. This is where those snacks can come in handy!

Find your safe places

We all get tired of chain restaurants. However, when you’re traveling they can be a safe haven in a world of dangerous foods. Go with what you know!

*** If you are dining at a chain restaurant in another country be sure to check the ingredients even in familiar dishes. Different areas of the world put their own spin on everyday dishes. This could lead to you intaking something you don’t want. Ask before you eat!

Accidental exposure is a thing

If you are traveling in a group of people that you might not know (i.e they aren’t aware of your allergy), clue someone in. This is especially important if you carry an EpiPen.

Check social media for restaurants that have accommodations

Simply do a quick search such as “peanut free (followed by the area to which you will be traveling)” or “gluten free ______”. You will be surprised at what you will find.
