We recently learned how to save money for travel from a college student. College students travel back and forth from school to home many times throughout the school year, and vice versa for parents of college students. This can be a big expense. We have some tips for saving that will help fund your travel. Let’s dive right into it!
Dorm vs Apartment
One of the biggest expenses of college is your home. It’s important to weigh out the pros and cons of dorms and apartments. Apartments can be shared with multiple roommates. Dorms have set costs and can include lots of small fees, but they can save on transportation because most everything you need is on campus. You need to examine all of the financial aspects of both options to see which will work best.
Bringing Everything From Home Can Cost You
This sounds odd, but it is true. If the school is a substantial distance away, it can actually be more cost effective to buy large items like furniture from thrift stores, discount stores, or even Facebook Marketplace rather than renting a moving truck. These options are often loaded with items that other college students are getting rid of. Items are often in good condition because they have been gently used.
Create a Wish List
Businesses like Amazon, Target,Walmart, etc. offer wish lists. These can save you a lot of money in the long run because family members can chip in for things you need. If possible, include a QR code for the list on the back of graduation party invitations.
Explore The Local Area
Explore the area around your college. This can be a fun staycation type thing to do. You never know what you’ll find!
Enroll in a Fuel Points/Perks Program
This can save a lot of money on gas. You have to buy groceries anyway. Put your grocery dollars to work for you. These discounts can be a lifesaver if you are driving back and forth between home and school!
Student Discounts on Airlines
Check with your school and with various airlines for student discounts. Believe it not, they do exist. You just have to do a little research.
